We Are Living Longer, But...

We Are Living Longer, But...

Yes, the good news is that the life expectancy of Filipinos today is approximately 72 years, up from 61 years in 1970. When compared to other ASEAN countries, the Philippines’ life expectancy is moderate. Singapore has one of the highest life expectancies globally, at around 83 years. This variation is influenced by factors such as healthcare facilities, economic development, and social conditions.

Now the bad news - while it’s true that we are living longer, we are not enjoying the extra years due to poor health. Many people in their 70s and 80s suffer from dementia, heart disease, arthritis, cancer, and Type 2 diabetes. This paradox can be attributed to various factors, including unhealthy lifestyles, poor choices of food, healthcare systems focused on treatment rather than prevention, and the consequences of aging.

Our modern lifestyles play a crucial role in the disconnect between longevity and good health. Sedentary behavior, unhealthy diets rich in highly processed foods, and excessive stress are major contributors to the rise of non-communicable diseases. For example, obesity has reached epidemic levels in many developed nations, increasing the risk of conditions such as diabetes, hypertension, and joint problems.

Moreover, the digital age has exacerbated physical inactivity and contributed to mental health challenges. Prolonged screen time and reduced face-to-face interactions are linked to issues like anxiety, depression, and social isolation, further diminishing overall health despite longer lifespans.

Also, as we age, the ends of our DNA (telomeres) become shorter. This makes us more likely to get sick. But lifestyle changes can boost telomerase, an enzyme that makes them longer. Plus, studies show diet rich in whole foods, antioxidants and healthy fats together with regular low-intensity exercise like walking, cycling, or swimming can help protect them.

This is the message of our Be Kind to Future You campaign which we launched last year. Since 1995, the year Healthy Options was founded, our mission has been to educate and enlighten our customers in their journey to wellness and in taking charge of their health.

We believe focusing on prevention rather than treatment is the way forward to a longer, richer, and more fulfilling life. It’s never too late to get into healthy habits and what better time to start than in this new year. See you soon in our stores.

Best of health,
